This decision was announced by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on May 28, 2024, via X (formerly Twitter). The IMD has issued a red warning for several districts, including Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj.

In his announcement, Assam Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of safety, urging people to stay safe during this period. As a result, all educational institutions, including both government and private schools in the affected districts, will remain shut on May 29, 2024. The closure aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and other staff members amid the severe weather conditions.
Despite the red alerts, the ongoing SEBA class 10 compartmental exam 2024, which began on May 28 and is scheduled to conclude on June 3, 2024, will continue as planned on May 29. The Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) has confirmed that the exams will be conducted according to the existing schedule.
Earlier in the day, an unfortunate incident occurred due to Cyclone Remal. A large eucalyptus tree fell on a school bus carrying approximately twenty students near the St. Ursala Higher Secondary School entrance in Dhekiajuli. Around 7:30 AM, the accident caused significant damage to the bus, highlighting the cyclone’s dangerous impact.
Additionally, the IMD has issued varying levels of warnings for other districts. Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Nalbari, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, and West Karbi Anglong are under an orange warning, while Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj are under a red alert due to exceptionally heavy rainfall.
The cyclone, which initially struck the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh after making landfall on Sunday, has since weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. Nonetheless, its effects continue to pose significant risks across the region.
In response to similar threats from heavy rainfall, other northeastern states such as Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Manipur had already ordered the closure of schools and offices earlier on Tuesday. The widespread precautionary measures reflect the severe weather conditions brought about by Cyclone Remal and the ongoing efforts to protect the public from potential harm.
