The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave warning with a red alert for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi for May 24. This warning indicates extremely high temperatures posing significant health risks. The forecast also predicts heatwave conditions in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
According to the IMD’s weather bulletin, severe heatwave conditions are expected in various regions as follows:
- Rajasthan: Many/most parts from May 23rd to 27th.
- Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh: Some/many parts from May 23rd to 27th.
- West Uttar Pradesh: During May 26th and 27th.
- Delhi: Isolated pockets from May 24th to 27th.
Additionally, isolated heatwave conditions are forecasted in:
- Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh until May 27.
- Gujarat until May 26.
- Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra until May 25.
Warm night conditions will persist over Rajasthan until May 27 and in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh until May 25.
In contrast to the heatwave conditions, the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, along with sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, are expected to experience scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next seven days.

- Rainfall in Andhra Pradesh on May 25.
- Rainfall in Kerala until May 25.
- Light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal districts of West Bengal and adjoining districts of North Odisha on May 26 and 27.
